Testing Birds for NPIP Certification

Required tests for certification in the NPIP are Salmonella Pullorum/Typhoid; Mycoplasma Synoviae; and Avian Influenza. These are separate tests conducted on the serum of each bird. A maximum of 300 birds per flock have to be tested for Salmonella Pullorum/Typhoid and Mycoplasma Synoviae, and a maximum of 30 birds have to be tested for Avian Influenza. Each farm owner is trained by a field inspector to test their own flocks during the farm inspection. Serum samples must be submitted to the laboratory to test for Avian Influenza. This procedure must be done yearly to continue certification.
