Testing Birds for NPIP Certification
Required tests for certification in the NPIP are Salmonella Pullorum/Typhoid. Mycoplasma Synoviae and Avian Influenza are optional, but may be necessary for your specific business. Salmonella and Mycoplasma are tests on individual bird serum performed by the producer/owner. A maximum of 300 birds per flock have to be tested for Salmonella Pullorum/Typhoid and Mycoplasma Synoviae. Farm owners are trained by a field inspector to test their flocks during the initial farm inspection. Samples for Avian Influenza testing are collected and perfomed by ISDA personnel. A minimum of 30 birds have to be tested for Avian Influenza. Testing of the flocks and farm inspections must be performed yearly to continue certification.
